A message from John Conkling...
Welcome to the Summer Pyrotechnic Seminar website. We have been offering
seminars on the chemistry of energetic materials since 1983, and will be
offering our next programs - including an Advanced Seminar - in the summer of
2008 on the beautiful
We will be offering the basic program "The Chemistry of Pyrotechnics and Explosives" on July 28-August 1, 2008. Joe Domanico, a chemist with over 30 years experience in both military and civilian pyrotechnics, will once again assist with the program, presenting pyrotechnic demonstrations to accompany the classroom discussions.
We will be offering an all-new Advanced program during the week of June 9-13, 2008. This program will be titled "Advanced Pyrotechnics 2008". It will cover a range of topics associated with pyrotechnic theory as well as the use of energetic materials to enhance safety and security in a variety of areas. There will be an extensive use of laboratory demonstrations to accompany the classroom portion of the program. Several guest lecturers will be discussing their particular areas of specialization as well. We recommend that persons attend the basic "Chemistry of Pyrotechnics and Explosives" program before attending an "advanced" program. Of course, persons with prior experience in the field of pyrotechnics and related energetic materials are welcome to attend either program. The list of distinguished guest speakers, and their topics, can be found under the " Special Topics" information. This section will be updated as the seminar date approaches and the program is finalized.
If you would like a printed copy of either of the 2008 brochures, please let me know and I will send one to you. Also, you can direct any interested colleagues to this website, which contains full details and a registration form.
To obtain details on the 2008 programs, click on the "Chemistry of Pyrotechnics & Explosives" icon or the "Advanced Pyrotechnics 2008" icon, and then use the page menu to get details on the program. Registration forms can be downloaded as well.
Please note that we have arrival and registration for both programs on Monday morning, rather than Sunday evening. The actual seminar programs will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, and run through noon on Friday.
ALSO, in a major change for the seminar program, we will NOT be offering room accommodations on campus for the seminars, and housing is NOT included in the seminar fee. For persons who will be traveling on Sunday, we recommend that you either stay at a Philadelphia or Baltimore airport hotel on Sunday evening, and then drive to Chestertown on Monday morning, or - alternatively - you may wish to drive to Chestertown on Sunday and stay at the Holiday Inn Express or Comfort Suites Hotels (the two hotels we recommend for your stay in Chestertown) that are located adjacent to one another one-half mile from the campus. Government rates should be available. Suggested housing options are listed under the "Who & Where" icon on each seminar's menu page.
If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about the program, please feel free to e-mail them to me at: jconkling2@washcoll.edu.
